The Sun Dies in the Mountains.
The photographs were taken in 2011, at a funeral in San Jeronimo Tlacochahuaya, Oaxaca. They sat scanned and untouched for years. We didn't know how to present them, or whether to, until the need to stitch a thread of memory back from Germany to where we're from gave them their form.
The work begins in the stillness of preparation: empty chairs, bowls, pieces of bread, presence in absence. Then the people arrive, the procession, the whole town walking alongside. Two embroidered pieces carry a portrait and a landscape of the sierra in patterns from the Central Valleys, and their threads fall toward a topographic model of the region, winding around the spot where the house still stands. The title is the first line of "Dios nunca muere," the waltz the town band played to lead the procession to its final stop.
Shown at GEH8, Dresden, from April 10 to May 15, 2026.
